I am a diabetic, what is your opinion about my condition: FBS average 95 mg/dL and post prandial 180 mg/dL...?
but well, it really fluctuates to a low of 65 and a high of 300 when I do not eat or over-ate, and I am Type 2 diabetic and my medications are the following: 5 mg of Euglocon in the morning, 500 mg of metformin (Glucophage) at lunchtime and 5 mg of Euglocon in the evening. Sometimes, I have episodes of hypoglycemia when my blood sugar drops to almost 55 and episodes of hyperglycemia when my blood sugar spikes to 300. My question is: Am I in control of my diabetes? Could I live another 10 years of my present condition though I have some neuropathy and arthritis (back pain) right now, but over-all I am still very much ambulatory and a bit active sexually though a little ED on the side? My glycated hemoglobin A1c was 6.8 mmo/L about 2 months ago. Am I over-dosing or under-dosing? Do I need insulin to even out my blood sugar? I am now almost 70 years old and very optimistic about life. Thank you.
As you did not mention your eating habits, I am going to find space here. You must eat good nutritious food, and even use food supplements, such as DiabetaMil or Diabetasol, or Glucerna or Nutren for diabetics, even for the time that you want to even out your blood sugar. A good average would be between FBS 95 mg/dL and post prandial (after meals) of a max of 140 mg/dL. This could be helped if you follow good eating habits that are nutritious and healthy. A good nutritionist would be in order, with a good doctor (a diabetologist or endocrinologist). You could also request the doctor to change your medicine or most probably lower the Euglocon.
And so, I am now asking "Are you consulting a doctor, preferably a diabetologist or an endocrinologist, about your diabetes?" How many years have you been a diabetic? While what you had narrated seems to be a good diabetic control with a glycated hemoglobin A1c at 6.8 which is normal, what I am quite concerned about you is your abnormal blood sugar drops from a low of 55 to a spike of 300. This is indicative of a poor control after-all. How often do you have low blood sugar? How often do you have high blood sugar? Maybe you need a really good doctor for your condition, and maybe he might prescribe for a good nutritionist to monitor your eating habits and at the same time (as you had written) to use insulin to even out your blood sugar. A good control would be a FBS below 100 mg/dL and a post prandial (2 hrs. after meals) below 140 mg/dL and insulin could provide those magic numbers. But well, as I am not a doctor, you have to consult your doctor on the matter.
It appears though that a little fine tuning of your condition would give you more fruitful years ahead of you and you may be surprised to find out later on that the 10 years you have asked would be surmounted if you make good over-all control of your diabetes. But you have to work for it.
